The Role of Anime and Gaming in Coaching Youth's Mental Resilience

💭We’ve all had those moments, haven’t we? Staying up way too late because we just couldn’t stop watching the next episode of Attack on Titan, or grinding through one more raid because that feeling of finally beating the boss was too good to walk away from cos like, mind you, this effort counts.
There’s something powerful in those experiences – Eren’s raw anger hitting close to home when we’re frustrated with the world around us when everything’s on the line. These aren’t just “fun distractions.” They’re real, human moments that quietly shift something inside us, making us feel a little less alone in our struggles.
That’s exactly why anime and gaming hold so much potential in coaching.
They’re not things to judge or push aside as childish hobbies. They’re bridges – places where many of us, especially when we’re young and still finding our way, first feel truly seen and understood. People of all ages DO connect with anime and games.
🫂When a Character Feels More Like a Friend Than Fiction
Remember the first time a character got you? Maybe it was Tanjiro refusing to give up finding the solution for his sister, no matter how hopeless he felt, or Deku in My Hero Academia pushing past his limits because someone finally believed in him (FYI, the series finally ended). Those stories hit different because they don't lecture – they show. They let us feel the struggle, the small wins, the tears, and the growth without anyone telling us "this is how you should be." It was mostly always worth it, ain’t it? In our space, when the coach says something like, "I've been thinking about how Itachi carried all that weight quietly – what do you think was going through his head?"... Suddenly the room changes. Right? It's not an interrogation anymore. It's a conversation between 2 people who get it. The coachee doesn't have to explain why anime matters to them; the coach already knows enough to meet them there. That tiny shared marvellous understanding? It builds trust faster than a dozen "tell me how you feel" questions. It's the same with vulnerability. When someone's hurting, quoting a line from A Silent Voice or Fruits Basket can open a door that feels safer than talking straight about pain. Because sometimes saying "I felt like that when..." is easier than "I'm broken right now."
👾Anime and Gaming in Coaching Isn't Just Play – It's Proof You're Growing
Let’s talk about games. Haven’t we all grown up playing games? Be in the Gameboy, PS, or Computers, even simple board games and sports games. Every time you suffer a defeat in the games and come back smarter, you're living resilience. Every time you hustle with random teammates in League of Legends and pull off a win despite the chaos, you're practicing real connection. These aren't abstract lessons – they're felt in your hands, in that adrenaline drop when things click. When the games stop and you realise hey, there is more to the games than this. Reading up about the lore of your fandom, supporting the creators’ works, they mean something to you.
A good coach doesn't ignore that fire. They understand that passion. They lean into it. "Remember that strategy you used to turn the game around? What if we tried something similar with this goal you're chasing?" It's not forcing the game into "productive" mode – it's honoring what already lights you up and saying, "Hey, the focus, the creativity, the grit you show here? That's already in you. Let's see where else it can take you."
For Gen Z especially, who often feel like the world doesn't quite get them, having a coach who doesn't roll their eyes at your Discord hours, Reddit posts or your anime watchlist... that means everything. It says: Your passions aren't weird. They're valid. You're valid.

A Little Space That Feels Like Home
All people need a safe place to be themselves. Creating spaces where people aren't shamed for what they love, but invited to bring all of themselves. At GRIP Connect, we get this deeply. Our AAMJ (ACG Appreciation & MangaChat Journaling) workshops are built exactly on that warmth: using anime, comics, games, and tools like MangaChat to help kids and youth (8-25) build real mental strength in a way that feels fun, not forced. It's group sessions online. Safe and supportive, where you can talk about characters, journal through mini-games and custom manga panels, track moods, set goals, and learn to balance digital life without guilt. Parents get glimpses into progress too, so everyone feels connected. We are not about "fixing" anyone. Our focus is about growing together, using the stories and worlds we already care about to feel a little less alone - because we really need to, right now.
If you've ever wished for a place where your love for anime and games could actually help you feel stronger, more grounded, more YOU, GRIP Connect’s AAMJ workshop is one gentle way that happens. You can trial it and see if it resonates by signing up at AAMJ Registration Form
At the end of the day, none of this is about anime or gaming being "useful tools." It's about remembering that the things that move us, that make us laugh or cry or scream at the screen at 2 a.m., are part of who we are. And when coaches meet us in those places – with curiosity, not judgment – something beautiful opens up🪷.
What about you? Is there a character, a game moment, or a story that's quietly changed how you see yourself? 💜We would love to hear.💜
